Dear friends, I now reveal the truth (a line from the opera): in alphabetical order of last name:

Chúng tôi vẫn tiếp tục nhận được những lời cảm nhận về vở opera ngay lúc này đây khi tôi đăng bài này. Vì không có nhiều thời gian để chờ, tôi quyết định đăng bài này sớm hơn dự định một ngày và vì vậy phải ‘hy sinh’ những lời cảm nhận vẫn đang trên đường đến chỗ tôi. Đây xin trình làng: theo thứ tự abc của họ:

To describe this time before the premiere of The Tale of Lady Thị Kính as “busy” is an understatement. It is extremely stressful, hectic, exhausting, at the very least. But rewarding, worthy, and excited at the same time, I imagine.

Thus, I do appreciate it so very much indeed any singer who could find time in their five-dimensional world of work and family to share some thoughts on their characters, as follow. Continue reading

A couple of weeks before the curtains rise on the stage of IU Opera Theater premiering The Tale of Lady Thị Kính by composer and librettist PQ Phan, lighting designer Todd Hensley has been at site working hard. I had a very brief talk with him yesterday, Monday, February 3, 2014. Brief, but enough to marvel you about the lighting aspect of the show that you are going to see on stage on February 7, 8, 14 and 15. Continue reading

As you are reading these words, all kinds of rehearsals are going on at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with utmost intensity. The working schedule is six days a week. Rehearsals involve the chorus, acting and singing with stage director and conductor, and the orchestra. They have less than two weeks to practice before the premiere of The Tale of Lady Thị Kính on February 7, 8, 14, 15 of 2014.

I described the rehearsal atmosphere at the workshop before. I stand by my earlier observations and think that they should be read before what is coming forward in this article. For the second time I witnessed the rehearsal, these are some of my additional comments. Continue reading

I would feel dreaded at the thought of having to drag myself out of the house at 20 degree weather to go to the shops at the MAC.

But I was glad I did, every time.

I would never know what kind of stories I was going to find there, be it about strings, foam, metal, clay, wood or bamboo. Continue reading
